London 2012: Conmen try to fleece Olympics fans with bogus hotel websitesConmen are setting u

p fake hotel websites to trick thousands of Olympics fans into reserving bogus rooms. It follows a similar scam at the MTV European Music Awards in

Belfast l

ast year, when Russian criminals replicated whole websites to plunder cash from unsuspecting victims. Visitors to this

summer’s Games in London are now being warned. Nearly 100 suspects have already been arrested, accused of selli

ng fake hotel rooms and tickets. A security source said: “It’s relatively simple to set up – a few hundred pounds would get it up and ru

nning. “But the beauty of this sort of scam is usually no-one twigs until people start turning up at the hotel demanding their room.” Olympics organisers fear chaos could be caused, with a “worst case scenario” of thousands arriving at th

eir hotels only to be told their bookings do not exist. Supt Nick Downing, head of a Games fraud crackdown, said: “Make sure you buy from legitimate websites or sellers, including Locog and Visit London. If t

he deal looks too good to be true, it probably is.”
