nded up ploughing into a works vehicle has been banned from the roads. Traffic cones had been placed on the eastbound carriageway of the M8 to make it clear to motorists they should steer well clear of the area. H

owever, boozed-up Edward Friel ran straight over them and his ‘car-azy’ driving only came to a halt when he smashed into a vehicle being used by crews who were carrying out the roadworks. Friel, of Netherhill Road, Gallowhill,

Paisley, was arrested at the scene and tests subsequently showed he had excessive amounts of alcohol in his system. Now he has had his driving licence suspended while a sheriff decides his fat

ty by letter when the case against him was called at Paisley Sheriff Court but was ordered to appear in person, due to the serious nature of t

he charges. And, when he met that request, he admitted driving dangerously and at excessive speed on the M8 motorway while over the drink-drive limit, failing to pay attention to lane closure signs, driving through lanes which were

closed off and colliding with a roadworks vehicle. Friel committed the offences at Junction 26 of the M8, near Hillington, on September

5 this year. After his arrest, he gave a

rine sample which showed he had 157 milligrammes of alcohol in his system, in excess of the legal limit of 107. Sheriff James Spy told Friel that background reports were needed before he could decid

I am not satisfied that this can be dealt with adequately

by fines and I consider that a community payback order, coupled with unpaid work, may be appropriate.” Sheriff Spy put an immediate driving ban in place and deferred sentence until January 20.
